The Skincare Staple: Vitamin C - AN Skin & Beauty

The Skincare Staple: Vitamin C

When it comes to your skin health and obtaining the absolute best results, very few compounds can do it better than Vitamin C. Made of a unique molecular structure, antioxidants like Vitamin C play a key role in the health of our skin cells and even our immune system. When applying this vitamin topically, in the form of a serum, it can provide potent benefits that increase the health and appearance of the skin.

Vitamin C is one of the most studied ingredients in skincare, and it is a staple in the skincare world for good reason. So what are the benefits of using a Vitamin C serum, you ask? Here are the deets!

What does Vitamin C Serum do for the skin?

For starters, Vitamin C is an antioxidant. Antioxidants are potent compounds that help fight free radicals and prevent or slow down outside damage caused to skin cells. If you aren’t aware, that is kind of a big deal, as free radicals are highly unstable molecules that can quickly accelerate skin aging, especially aging caused by environmental factors. Things like UV exposure, inflammation, ozone, blue light, cigarette smoke and even pollution can all affect your skin negatively! Enter Vitamin C: Which shuts down ALL of that. Think of it as a repellent for the skin barrier, blocking stressors that are incoming all day long, trying to age you and give you dull-looking skin!

As an antioxidant, it also offers synergistic benefits when paired with other ingredients and products. It pairs extremely well with sunscreen for example, as it increases your protection from UV rays even more than using sunscreen alone! On top of that, vitamin C also boosts collagen production and reduces dark spots, so pairing it with other anti-aging and brightening skincare is going to boost results!

Let’s break it down more!

How vitamin C benefits wrinkles

Since Vitamin C prevents UV damage, it also prevents collagen breakdown. UV exposure breaks down the collagen in our skin, causing it to lose elasticity and that healthy, bouncy look. It inhibits the activation of protein AP-1, which is to blame for this breakdown of collagen.

Also, Vitamin C can keep the body’s ability to naturally produce collagen running nice and smooth, and it can actually speed up the process post-procedure or after experiencing a wound or injury. Vitamin C application is shown to heal the skin faster, with less downtime than without using a vitamin C serum! This antioxidant is amazing at regulating natural collagen synthesis within the body.

How Vitamin C benefits dark spots

Tyrosinase is an enzyme that the body produces in response to sun and UV exposure. It is what starts the creation of melanin, which ultimately creates dark spots and uneven skin tone. Inhibiting this enzyme is a key component to preventing and even reversing sun damage, and you are in luck: Vitamin C does just that. This can significantly reduce pesky conditions like PIH, melasma, and hyperpigmentation by inhibiting the tyrosinase cycle from the very beginning!

How Vitamin C heals the skin

Vitamin C is great at increasing hydration within the skin, allowing the skin barrier to be healthy and functional. By enhancing the skin’s moisture, it also creates an environment for the skin to heal and decrease inflammation faster. So acne, psoriasis, and eczema sufferers, listen up! Vitamin C can drastically reduce inflammation and help calm the skin, reduce redness and irritation, and get the barrier back to homeostasis. Oh, and another fun fact: vitamin C can regulate oil production, so it can actually help reduce and prevent acne as well!

As a recap – Benefits include:

-provides protection against free radicals

-protects the skin from UV damage

-minimizes appearance of redness and hyperpigmentation

-promotes wound healing

-boosts collagen production

-brighter and more youthful skin

-helps skin retain moisture

-reduces inflammation and acne breakouts

-balances oil production

Our Formula: New Versus Old

If you are new here, we once had a Vitamin C serum called our “Brightening C Serum” that was a huge hit for everyone. However, with new technology and improvements, we went back to the drawing board and reformulated the C serum to be better and more luxurious than ever.

Our new and improved formula called for a new name: Triple Antioxidant C Serum. This serum is not only compounded with a higher percentage of Ascorbic Acid (20% instead of 15%) and Vitamin E, but the new delivery system allows for better absorption, maximum skin protection, and even blocks the harmful blue light from our screens! The comprehensive brightening system found within this formula includes a triple duty ascorbate blend, arbutin, emblica, bearberry extract, Co-Q-10 and citrus terpenes. It is truly a blend like no other.

Our original formula contained a few key highlights such as Vitamin E, ferulic acid, and hyaluronic acid, but it didn’t contain any of the brightening ingredients listed above, which are truly going to bring your results to the next level. Our original formula was also made of a lower percentage of vitamin C, and oxidized fairly easily, reducing the effectiveness of the formula over time. As you’ll learn with this formula, however, the antioxidants found within this don’t oxidize (it looks clear instead of yellow or brown – which is what you want!), and with that, you’ll also notice that even if your skin is being extra sensitive or finicky due to the weather or getting a peel, this vitamin C serum will actually help heal it instead of irritating it more, like many C serums do! This is because our unique formula found in the Triple Antioxidant C Serum is encapsulated in a liposome, making it a time-released formula that slowly absorbs into the skin, allowing for better results and no irritation or side effects like some can cause.

Can I use Vitamin C serums daily?

Yes! And you should use it daily! Excessive exposure to pollutants reduces your body’s natural levels of vitamin C, so replenishing it daily is ideal for having the healthiest skin possible. And just FYI, Vitamin C is an essential vitamin that the body cannot produce on its own, so the only way we can boost the body with this vitamin is through food, supplementation, and topicals, such as a vitamin C serum!

As with all skincare, consistency is key, so using it daily is going to bring the most ideal results, faster! Consider using it morning and night, since each time of day has its own unique benefits.

When applying in the morning, you will provide your skin with extra protection from UV rays and other stressors, blocking the skin from harm. When applied at night, your skin is finally getting a break from all of the stressors it comes across all day, and this is when it can finally repair itself and focus on things like collagen production and healing.

How to use

Use Vitamin C after cleansing and toning. We suggest using 3-5 drops and applying directly to the face without touching the dropper on your skin – this gets the most product directly on your skin without it seeping between your fingers. Once it has fully absorbed, then proceed to use creams and moisturizers, and if it is daytime, don’t forget to finish with sunscreen! With daily use, you will begin to see results right away with your skin’s overall appearance! And it just gets better in time!

After applying, be sure to store it properly. Seal the bottle fully, and keep it in a dark, cool space. Use daily for the best results, and don’t forget to take a before and after photo – you will be so thankful you added in a high-quality antioxidant serum such as our Triple Antioxidant C Serum!
