The Dos and Don'ts of Post-Sun Exposure Skincare - AN Skin & Beauty

The Dos and Don'ts of Post-Sun Exposure Skincare

Taking care of your skin in the summertime does not start and end only with sunscreen! Your skin is in a fragile state after being exposed to the sun, heat, sweat, and grime that comes with our favorite time of the year. Here are some Do’s and Don’ts of post-sun exposure skincare:

Do

  1. Hydrate your skin

Hydrate inside and out! After spending time in the sun, your skin can become dehydrated. So, drink plenty of water and apply a moisturizer to keep your skin happy.

2. Use a gentle cleanser

Use a gentle cleanser that is right for your skin type to wash your face. Avoid using harsh scrubs or exfoliants as they can further damage your skin.

3. Apply aloe vera

Got a little red despite your best efforts? Aloe vera is great for soothing sunburned skin. Apply aloe vera gel to the affected area for relief from pain and redness. If possible, try to find a 100% aloe vera product free of any added chemicals.

4. Avoid over-exposure

Feel free to have fun in the sun every day! But, make sure that you are wearing protective clothing and sunscreen if you plan on being outdoors. If you have a day where you were over-exposed and burned, consider taking a break to allow your skin to heal and rehydrate.

Don’t

  1. Use hot water

We know, there's nothing like a nice hot shower, but avoid using hot water after a day in the sun as it can further irritate sunburned skin. Hot water strips away natural oils on your face, leading to irritation and dry skin.

2. Use harsh products

Maybe this isn’t the best time to use your new exfoliant scrub.  Avoid harsh chemical ingredients and abrasive washing. Your skin is in a fragile state when sunburned, don’t pour gasoline on the fire!

3. Pick or scratch

Your mom always told you this, and now it's our turn, don’t pick or scratch! Picking or scratching at sunburned skin can cause further damage and increase the risk of infection. Avoid scars and broken skin with this simple tip.

4. Forget to wear sunscreen

We have said it a million times and we will say it again, SPF SPF SPF! Sunscreen is important even after you have been exposed to the sun. Apply a mineral sunscreen free of harmful chemicals everyday.

5. Stay in the sun for too long

Limit your time in the sun, especially during peak hours when the sun's rays are strongest. Utilize shade around you, wear sunscreen, and wear protective clothing. Summer fun doesn’t have to stop, just make sure you protect your radiant self.
