Spooky skincare: ingredients you don't want on your face
Trick or treat to your heart’s content, but don’t let your skincare be what’s scary this holiday. We’re demystifying some of the most terrifying ingredients out there and highlighting the treats you’ll find in medical-grade skincare.
Scariest ingredients on the market
Parabens
Parabens are chemicals added to extend the shelf-life of skincare products with perishable ingredients. They’ll keep your serums undead, but they’re proven to be harmful for the body. Parabens interrupt hormonal cycles in the body, are not safe for pregnant women, and often irritate the skin. You’re better off with products that expire rather than ones packed with terrifying preservatives.
Phthalates
Phthalates are creepy chemical compounds used in plastic to make it more durable. So why are they in products meant for your face? Many cosmetic companies use phthalates to improve product texture and boost scent, but similar to parabens, they are known to interrupt hormonal cycles and can cause reproductive harm. Reach for something phthalate free to enjoy your skincare routine worry-free!
Harsh Sulfates
Sulfates are a group of chemicals commonly used in skincare for their cleansing properties. Sulfates do a great job at cleaning the skin, but some–specifically Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), Sodium laureth sulfate (SLES)–are extremely harsh on the skin and quickly strip it of its natural oils. Steer clear of horrifyingly harsh sulfates and choose products with mild ones instead.
Medical-grade magic
Instead of using aggressive ingredients that irritate your skin and harm your body, medical-grade formulas use naturally derived active ingredients that’ll gently improve your skin.
At AN Skin we:
