All About ACNE!
Let's talk about acne.
Acne is an inflammatory skin condition that occurs when pores become plugged up with oil and dead skin cells. Pores become plugged due to one or more of these things:
1. Excessive oil production
2. Inability of the hair follicle to remove debris
3. Bacteria overgrowth
4. Excessive androgens
Now what causes one or more of these things to happen? Ya ready?
-medications (like corticosteroids, testosterone, etc)
-diet (skim milk, processed sugars, etc)
-hormonal changes like menopauses or puberty
-greasy environments (working in a hot kitchen)
-products that contain pore-clogging oils
-friction on the skin (wearing a mask)
That is quite the list, huh! It's no wonder that it can be tricky to narrow down the cause of acne!
As an esthetician, my focus is to calm acne and regardless of what the cause is, I suggest a few key things:
-avoid inflammatory foods as much as possible -this means avoiding dairy, gluten, and processed sugars
-adhere to a consistent skincare routine morning and night - this often includes adding in medical grade skincare products, and in some cases, adding in topical medications (like dapsone gel, azelaic acid, or retinol)
-receive skin therapies to help reduce acne and potential scarring (chemical peels, extractions, basic facials)
-schedule an appointment with a doctor to check hormone levels
If you look below, you can see some of my clients' skin that is healing from acne. The last picture is when my acne first started improving and I finally took photos. So trust me, I know acne can be frustrating. But it is possible to beat. I struggled with acne when I was a teenager, and again in my mid twenties due to hormonal imbalances. It takes time and consistency, but if you trust the plan and believe that your skin will heal - it will.
