Acids And The Skin

Acids And The Skin

The word “acid” sounds scary 😳 but lemme tell ya - acids are what make medical grade skincare products so effective! So let’s learn a lil bit about this topic, shall we???
There are 2 forms of hydroxy acids that are amazing 🤩 for the skin: alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) and beta hydroxy acids (BHAs). Hydroxy acids exfoliate the skin and can help with everything from anti-aging to fighting congestion and acne. They can be found in cleansers, toners, moisturizers 🧴, scrubs, peels and masks!

Hydroxy acids: -decrease inflammation -decrease the appearance of large pores -even your skin tone -improve skin texture -remove dead skin cells -unclog pores to prevent acne

AHAs are water-soluble acids made from sugary fruits 🍎 They help peel away the surface of your skin so that new, more evenly pigmented skin cells can generate. They also help stimulate collagen. Check the below image to see all the types of AHAs and their benefits!
BHAs are an oil-soluble acid and get deeper into the pores to remove excess sebum. The most common BHA is salicylic acid. It is known to fight bacteria 🦠 and acne. These acids penetrate much deeper into the hair follicle than AHAs. Look above to see the benefits of BHAs!

Both AHAs and BHAs have similar benefits because they exfoliate the skin, but they do serve slightly different purposes. *They can also be found together in skincare products!

And make sure you wear sunscreen DAILY if you use products with these acids, as they can make you more sensitive to the sun ☀️ !

Some of my fave products with AHAs and BHAs:
•AHA/BHA exfoliating cleanser from SkinMedica
•Gentle foaming cleanser from Epionce
Purifying toner from Epionce
•AN Exfoliating pads
•Strawberry Rhubarb Dermafoliant scrub from Eminence
•Lytic TX serum from Epionce
•Barrier Renewal Complex from Elta MD

Check your products 🤔 and see if they contain active ingredients like AHAs or BHAs! It’s good to learn about what ingredients are in your products & how they work on your skin! 👌🏼
